THE COTTAGE PROGRAM
This program is designed to teach dynamic skill-building lessons from an interdisciplinary approach.
The developmentally challenged community often finds themselves without
resources or understandings to assess and resolve personal and social challenges.
Through the implementation of educational and therapeutic YouTube videos, students will learn fundamental
principles that will guide them to make positive independent choices based on
championing everyday challenges they are presented with.
Other key areas of instruction include a special focus on
enhancing problem-solving and decision-making skills, cognitive, interpersonal, communication, team
building skills, and music appreciation.
This program is designed helping participants understand the roots and effects
and consequences of anger from a physiological perspective from a community risk assessment perspective
and to understand how anger effects those who love and care about us.
This program will teach participants how to effectively understand defuse, reduce, and redirect angry
emotions and sentiments.
The curriculum will analyze different forms of anger and their sources such as:
-
Aggressive anger
-
Defensive anger
-
Frustration anger,
-
Outrage anger just to name a few.
We will introduce students to the techniques and strategies so they may cope with various types of anger.
This program promotes healthy growth and development
in addition to providing numerous other benefits for participants.
Through the application of various physical activities combined with “mind-body connection”
breathing techniques, participants will establish healthy lifestyle patterns that will carry them forward
for the rest of their lives. Building fine motor skills in the gym translates to inspiring basic job readiness.
These benefits include learning how to cope with stress and anxiety while improving mental health
and clarity. Improvng focus and concentration, and achieving a positive sense of self-esteem.
Language and Social Skills Development and Comprehension are the foundations of each of our programs.
We blend these skill set development techniques within every program and activity.
We use group interactions and the memorization of primary statements, responses,
and assessments along with the understandings and feelings
of how they impact the way we respond to others and situations.
We will introduce basic concepts of sociology and psychology within a dynamic interactive blend
of practical language skills development while taking into consideration principles
concerning triggering effective brain development.
While we will have designated sessions for primary focus on language development,
this is woven within the fabric of our whole program.
Language development is essential to every form of scholastic achievement.
This program is based on certain principles and understandings.
These principles and understandings consist of teaching participants:
-
How to assess and understand environmental questions using a person’s 5 senses
-
hearing, tasting, touch, sight, smell
-
How to identify appropriate responses.
-
How to avoid impending crisis in the community.
-
How to avoid being targeted in the community.
-
What to do if one is targeted in the community.
-
How to recognize personal space as a safety barrier to prevent dangerous incidents from occur-ring.
-
How to utilize safe resources in case one gets lost in the community.
We use video and roll play scenarios along with discussions to develop community
safety scenarios and skills development.
This is another area where language development is also effectively woven.
This unique program provides participants with a truly inspiring experience.
With the goal of preparing participants for employment, participants will experience task responsibility and
effective teamwork dynamics while giving back to their communities.
WHMIS training will also be incorporated into the program to provide safety and hazard awareness.
Together participants will work constructively while gaining experience and confidence at the same time.
Additionally, participants are also given the opportunity to work towards a valuable work reference in
which they can utilize to obtain future employment.
We presently have an opportunity for “on the job training” at the Sheridan hotel.
Our programs are all inspired, blending language development with
social interactive and strategic behavioral management and
processing while building practical life skills.
Groups will promote discussions and share understandings while
empowering participants to learn how to aspire towards independence by accessing
readily available resources such as “YouTube” as a primary resource.
Our gym program will be unique in that we have
contracted personal trainers who will support participants
in developing progressive training modalities that should assist them in optimizing
health while accepting kinetic training and exercise as a necessary part of each day.
We are the only program that hires developmentally challenged persons.
Our own receptionist is developmentally challenged
and we have a group assistant who also displays special needs.
Our ideal milieu would be a hybrid college environment that would
empower participants to fill every possible gap towards independence.
This program is designed to be a bridging program for
participants from the school environment to the home environment.
The format of the program is to assist participants in organizing
their thoughts and creating connections to behavioral sources and triggers.
Participants answer a series of questions is created with expressive pictures
to help them articulate appropriate reflections and ideas of appropriate responses.
The questions are designed to collect information about the clients past evening,
sleep as well as his or her moods and expectations for their day.
Additionally, the last question asks the student of his or her ideas of how foster parents may best support
them in their quest towards having a prosperous day.
This program will be a great resource for participants who experience behavioral challenges which may be
coupled with classical perceptual or behavioral triggers that
may flow from experiences during their day at the centre.
Furthermore, it will build self-esteem whilst offering the student
an opportunity for accolades for furtive and cooperative performances.
This program is an all-day program located on Lake Scugog.
Participants will carry their own life vests.
Activities will include hiking, swimming, kayaking. Basic job readiness activities such as raking, sweeping,
yard clearing, planting and operating a lawn mower.
The development of language and social skills will continue while we enjoy activities.
Unfortunately, due to behaviors, anxieties, and other concerns regarding safety in the community,
most often developmentally challenged youth are limited in their basic experiences.
It is important to present as many opportunities for participants to experience new activities while learning.
We understand these activities are essential to brain development.
Additionally, neuro linguistic evolution can be stimulated by physical and environmental experiences
therefore promoting a need to express verbally.
We believe in creating a subtle active therapeutic environment where participants can enjoy
relaxed outdoor recreational experiences while they are being challenged to develop themselves.
